Job Title:               Financial Counselor, Revenue Cycle

Reports To:       Director, Revenue Cycle

Job Summary:     Develops customer relationships to assist patients as they go through the financial process from clearance to claim adjudication. Assists Director of Revenue Cycle in improving revenue cycle operations and the financial strength of CCHCI.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Revenue Cycle Financial Counseling
  • Documents and reports payment information.
  • Counsels’ self-paid patients and those with insufficient insurance coverage to assist them in the determination of suitable payment arrangements and/or the disposition of expected patient balances.
  • Negotiates and strategizes patient payment arrangements.
  • Educates patients about payment options and financial assistance.
  • Refers patients to CCHCI Outreach and Enrollment to review available State and Federal financial assistance programs, the CCHCI Sliding Fee Discount Program, the CCHCI Prompt Pay Program, etc.
  • Follows up proactively on Accounts Receivable to establish payment plans with patients.
  • Collaborates with Financial Clearance team as needed to address patient financial arrangements.
  • Reviews and processes patient and insurance company forms.

 

  • Assists in Maintaining Optimal Revenue Cycle System Support and Financial Strength of CCHCI
  • Maintains and updates CCHCI Financial Counseling Policies and Procedures.
  • Updates CCHCI patient account information to ensure that the correct financial classification and information is current in the NextGen Practice Management (PM) system.
  • Performs financial analyses to determine patient’s ability to pay for services to be rendered or that have been rendered.
  • Works in collaboration with Providers, Health Center Administrators, Patient Service Representatives, Patient Access Staff and Business Office Staff to address the patient's financial needs while securing a source of funding for services rendered.
  • Participates in the life cycle of a claim by working collaboratively with the collections department to identify patients that may need assistance. Includes review and recommendation for bad debt based on historical patient information.

 

 

Required Education, Experience, Certificates & Licenses:

  • Associate degree in business.
  • 1 year of experience as a Healthcare Financial Counselor.
  • Driver's License and Proof of Insurance may be required if requesting mileage reimbursement.

 

Preferred Education, Experience, Certificates & Licenses:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, preferred.
  • 3 years of experience as a Healthcare Financial Counselor preferred.

 

 

 


Required Language Skills:

  • Ability to comprehend and compose instructions, correspondence, and communications in English in both oral and written format.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to patients, families, internal providers and staff, insurance companies, and other agency staff working in cooperation with the organization.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to occasionally exert enough force to move objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
  • Ability to continuously remain in a stationary position.
  • Ability to occasionally move about inside the workplace to access files, office machinery, etc.
  • Possesses hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to constantly operate computers, telephone, and other office machinery.
  • Possesses close visual acuity necessary to accurately record and view information on a computer monitor, handwritten and typed documents.
  • Ability to discern the nature of sounds at a normal spoken volume.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.
  • Ability to skillfully gather and analyze data.
  • Ability to perform a variety of assignments and make decisions requiring considerable independent judgment.
  • Displays a high level of critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Displays sound and accurate judgment and ability to make timely decisions.
  • Knowledge of billing, medical records, medical office operations, health plans, and community health centers preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical insurance and collections.
  • Knowledge of authorization process.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and Corporate Compliance rules and regulations.
  • Computer literacy is required with proficiency in the use of all Microsoft Office programs.
  • Knowledge of Electronic Health Records required.
  • Knowledge of NextGen Practice Management (PM) system preferred.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service by mail, telephone, and in-person.
  • Ability to employ motivational techniques to train, mentor and lead staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain professional and effective relationships with customers, professionals, and internal staff.
  • Ability to prioritize and plan work, use time efficiently and develop realistic action plans.

 

Work Environment & Conditions:

  • Work environment is usually typical of an administrative office setting with no substantial exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
  • Work requires reliable transportation as position requires frequent travel and extended hours to include early mornings, evenings, holidays, and weekends.
  • Work requires the ability to be contacted by cell phone during or outside of regular work hours.
