Job Purpose:               

Assists provider in the administration of patient care in assigned clinical areas.

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the lead nurse, assists the provider with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatments, dressing changes, immunizations and injections according to state and federal guidelines while adhering to their scope of practice as defined by the Arizona Nurse Practice Act.

Essential Job Functions 

  • Assists provider in the administration of patient care in assigned clinical areas.
  • Identifies patient service requirements by establishing rapport with the patient and others while being aware of age specific needs and protocols.
  • Directs patients to exam rooms; obtains accurate routine patient vital signs including height, weight and oxygen levels; records vital signs in the chart; prepares patient for examination; assists with performing EKG’s, injections, and other treatments as ordered by the provider.
  • Performs tests and completes other tasks as assigned.
  • Assists provider in examination of patients and gives instructions to patients as directed by provider.
  • Administers on site medications to include immunizations and injections as directed by provider. Always checks the “5 rights” of patient medication administration and follows policy in regards to expired medications.
  • Fills out appropriate immunization paperwork for recording purposes.
  • Answers telephone calls and takes messages for provider. Returns patient phone calls as directed by provider.
  • Cleans and prepares rooms between patients while maintaining infection control standards and stocks exam rooms.
  • Processes referrals, refills medications, and coordinates appointments for specific care and diagnostic procedures.
  • Acts as a liaison with providers and other care givers.
  • Pulls requested charts for messages and documentation.
  • Receives reports on patients and delivers them to the appropriate provider.
  • As instructed notifies patient of test results when instructed to do so by provider.
  • Assures quality of care by maintaining clinic standards of care while adhering to requirements of other governing agencies.
  • Protects patients and employees by complying with infection control policies and protocols, following medication administration, storage procedures and controlled substance regulations.
  • Performs sterilization of instruments and surgical packs in a timely manner.
  • Maintains documentation of patient care services by completing patient and department records in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Documents verbal and written procedures, medication, delivery of care, and pertinent information regarding care rendered to the patient.
  • Ensures operation of medical equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer’s instructions, reporting malfunctions, requesting repairs, maintaining equipment inventory, and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • When needed, perform all lab draws and maintains laboratory documents.

Education and/or Experience

  • Medical Assistant certification required.
  • Military experience in Medical Assistant Program.
  • Understanding of healthcare’s Grandfather Clause law.
  • Valid Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate required.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, comprehend and write instructions, correspondence and memos.
  • Ability to gather data in an organized fashion from varied sources.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish language preferred.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in oral, written or visual format.
  • Ability to perform a variety of assignments requiring considerable exercise of independent judgment.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

  • As available to support education and experience claims.
  • Certified Professional Coder preferred.

Other Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of health plans and community health centers, preferred.
  • Computer literacy required.
